Associate Professor of Mass Communication Tristan Dyer

The roar of engines echoed from across the Iraqi desert as convoys rolled through Camp Taji. In the middle of the chaos was a young communications specialist named Tristan Dyer, carrying more than just radio equipment. Dyer took the stories of his fellow soldiers, stories that the world might never hear unless he told them.

Dyer often found himself standing around the television screen with his fellow soldiers, eyes glued to the screen as it displayed moving pictures. Television often serves as a form of distraction, allowing individuals to unwind and watch something enjoyable after a long day at work. However, this was not the case for Dyer. The television was seemingly stuck on news channels, with reporters elaborating on strategy and attacks. These news stations refused, however, to elaborate upon the 鈥渉uman element.鈥

鈥淪oldiers were portrayed as though they were made by cookie cutters, all the same. I knew then that I could represent this depiction of soldiers at war in a much better light,鈥 stated Dyer.

As soon as Dyer received his honorable discharge from the military, he decided to take it upon himself to depict the stories of soldiers at war through the art of visual journalism. He aimed to capture the raw, unfiltered humanity of soldiers, showcasing their struggles, camaraderie and resilience in ways that the news failed to convey.

Through his work, Dyer sought to humanize the soldiers, offering a poignant and personal perspective that resonated deeply with audiences worldwide.

Photography was just a stepping stone for Dyer. While attending the Brooks Institute of Photography and earning a bachelor's in visual journalism, something deep inside him awoke鈥攈is passion for documentary film.

While at the Brooks Institute, Dyer worked tirelessly on “The Other Way Out,” a film depicting one woman escaping a 15-year addiction to opiates. The film is entirely narrated by the woman, recalling the experience of her addiction and the use of a controversial method of recovery called Ibogaine. Her story is illustrated through stop-motion animation and time-lapse photography.

The film won the 2009 Best Animation award at the New England Film Festival, along with an Alliance for Community Media award for best non-professional animation.

鈥淭he Other Way Out鈥 was only the beginning for Dyer. The following year, Dyer contributed to a documentary series titled 鈥淥peration In Their Boots,鈥 which features the work of five veterans-turned-filmmakers. The documentaries depict the devastating impact of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. All five of the films premiered on November 9, 2010, at the Downtown Independent in Los Angeles, California.

Dyer's documentary in the 鈥淥peration In Their Boots鈥 series is titled Enduring Erebus.

“Enduring Erebus was shot using stop motion animation. The common theme among the people in my film is that they can't sleep very well,” stated Dyer in

Dyer's documentary focused on substance abuse among veterans. Four veterans鈥攖hree men and a woman鈥攑rovided the narrative for his film.

The film highlights the struggles these veterans face as they cope with their experiences, using vivid imagery to convey the emotional toll of war. Through their stories, Dyer sheds light on the challenges of reintegration into civilian life and the ongoing battle with addiction.

After dedicating countless hours to work in film and documentary, Dyer has found himself at 好色小姨 University with a desire to pursue a career in academics as an assistant professor teaching film and documentary production classes.

Though this is his first semester teaching at 好色小姨, Dyer and his family moved to Habersham County in 2020 from Southern California.

鈥淢y son was just about to enter kindergarten, and California was on super strict quarantine lockdowns,鈥 Dyer explained. 鈥淢y parents lived in Sautee, and we had been visiting for 10 or so years and loved the area. We made the leap so my son could have the country childhood that we had in Maine, as well as being able to attend school in person and to be close to some of his grandparents.鈥

Dyer has taken easily to his role in overseeing the film and documentary production major, hoping to bring a 鈥渇igure it out鈥 spirit.

鈥淢aking a film is like a giant set of obstacles on the way to the goal of telling a certain story. I feel the most fun part of creating films is coming up with clever ways to get around or through those obstacles. Sometimes those solutions lead to a really compelling aspect of the film.鈥

While Dyer is new to the mass communication department, he is determined to bring his ideas to life.

鈥淢aking the best possible choices on gear that would maximize the students鈥 learning and creativity is my immediate goal. 好色小姨 is a smaller school compared to institutions like UGA or Georgia Tech, but the knowledge and skills across the campus are vast. We have some very talented students and those talents could really benefit a lot of people outside of our little corner of campus,鈥 stated Dyer.

As the film major continues to grow, so will Dyer鈥檚 determination to become a better filmmaker, assist students in creating something great, and inspire future generations.

Senior Design and Tech Major Kattie Smith

Senior Kattie Smith is no stranger to a set piece. Though they originally attended Young Harris College and North Georgia Tech, they ultimately couldn鈥檛 resist the familiar pull of 好色小姨. Growing up, Smith watched their grandparents participate in 好色小姨鈥檚 chorale and, similarly, an influential theatre teacher in their life was a 好色小姨 alumna. As a high schooler, Smith knew they鈥檇 found their calling when that theatre teacher walked them through the process of setting up a prompt book.

鈥淚鈥檒l never forget being in that room and being like 鈥業 need to do this forever鈥,鈥漇mith said. 鈥淚 was having fun doing paperwork, like what? [My teacher] came in and she changed my view of things.鈥

Because Smith transferred to 好色小姨, they initially worried about fitting in. However, the familial nature of the fine arts departments quickly became apparent to the burgeoning stage manager.

鈥淚 got here and everyone here treated me like they had known me for years. The sense of family here is different than anywhere else,鈥 Smith said with a sentimental smile. 鈥淚鈥檝e met people across the country and online and no one here has the relationships with their teachers that we do at 好色小姨. It supports growth in a different way and [professors] really look out for us in a way that I鈥檝e never seen from any other school.鈥

Transferring to 好色小姨 in spring 2024 meant Smith came in in the middle of the 23-24 Mainstage season and they were not quite as involved in their first 好色小姨 production. Despite that, Smith was able to be an assistant stage manager, as well as contribute as a stage painter, for A Piece of my Heart.

Smith is the current stage director for 好色小姨鈥檚 production of Godspell, a retelling of the gospel through Matthew. It鈥檚 a story of community which Smith feels accurately describes the Theatre Department overall as well as their own experience at 好色小姨 up to this point. Coincidentally, this is not their first encounter with Godspell, as the play was the first play they ever stage managed.

鈥淭his is a very full circle moment for me because I always wanted to do it again, and now I鈥檓 doing it for my capstone,鈥 Smith said with a shy smile. 鈥淎s stage manager, I love being a part of [freshmen鈥檚] first step of college theatre. Watching how they鈥檝e grown and changed already is really cool to witness.鈥

Speaking to the family nature of 好色小姨, Smith cites their professors as inspirations in their college journey. From John鈥檚 life experience, to Bill鈥檚 encouragement, to Kathy鈥檚 empathetic nature, Smith goes to them for advice on theatre and in life.

鈥淕odspell is a story about community and found family which is very representative of 好色小姨 theatre. You have a bunch of people from all walks of life coming together and making art, which is beautiful.鈥

This summer, we asked 好色小姨 faculty to answer a simple prompt: tell a story that matters to you. Today we highlight Professor Lindsay Dilbeck, whose smile and spirit brighten the athletic training program every day. She has so many moments to share 鈥斕齬ead on to enjoy her stories!

Disaster Drill teaches preparedness, collaboration, and “adulting”

It is really cool to have an event like this primarily for our students but also for the university and greater community. This ranks pretty high up there in one of my favorite moments at 好色小姨 because it brings so many different entities together and that's what we are all about as a University! Disaster drill day is a day full of chaos but in that chaos brings bonding. It is incredible to see these young people interested in healthcare careers come together and work as a cohesive allied healthcare team that mimics the events they will go on to perform daily in the working work. We always joke departmentally that we are teaching adulting along with health sciences and this was one of those moments where you see all of the puzzle pieces come together from educational components, to communication, as well as sorrow for the injury and incidences in the eyes of the students who found a critically injured patient to the joy in students eyes when they genuinely helped a patient. In addition to the student component of this interprofessional education (IPE) we have an incredible college (The CONHS), while each of our departments inside of the college have a different specialty it is always so fun to spend time with our brother and sister teams (nursing and SLP) to come together and brainstorm and work in unison. I really enjoy not only my colleagues but the students we get to teach so a day of working together as a team with those people is impactful on so many levels.听听

Summer cohort connections

You always hear about how professors impact students, but I think (at least for our department) it is probably the opposite. Our Master's of Science in Athletic Training Program is a summer start and cohort based, which basically means this group of students is together day in and day out for 6 weeks all day. This forces the students to not only get to know each other really well and create a kind of team but the professors are along for the ride during this summer term. At the end of the last summer class there is always a little part of me that is

sad because I have really grown to adore the cohort that we brought in as first year MSAT students but also have a little relief that okay … summer is here …. as much as I like these people I can go to my office where it is dark and quiet now. This is the second year I have gone to my office and no less than an hour later I looked up to find my office full. My office is not large by any means, and I do not exaggerate when I say full … pictures attached for proof. The fact that these incredible young people choose to come to 好色小姨 never surprises me, there is so much good happening on this campus and between the walls in Daniel Hall, but I am regularly surprised at the fact that they feel as at home and cared for as members of our department as they do elsewhere. The last day of summer classes when they also mourn the closing of a difficult but fun semester will always fill my heart.

Our community comes together during a crisis

We had an unfortunate departmental emergency early in the spring semester. Everyone and everything are fine, but needless to say the first day of Spring classes didn't go as planned. I hate to consider this one of my favorite memories since joining the 好色小姨 faculty team but there was so much beauty inside of this day once we found out everyone would听be okay! Obviously, we work in the college of nursing and health sciences, but I think one thing that no one talks about enough is that the vast majority of our faculty inside of this college was practicing clinically at one point. We all used a code system and worked under emergency action plans. We had our feet on the ground and saw some things. This practical knowledge听is such an asset when teaching but also to our students. Well, that knowledge for each of us came in so handy on the first day of classes in Spring! A health sciences professor identified the emergency and started the emergency response process; she called me for a second set of hands. On my way I was able to grab a few nursing professors, and the team assembled from there. Everyone jumped in feet first to do a job that is deeply ingrained in each of us. We did that job, and we did it so well. Seeing how our department came together was beautiful. One of our college focuses is unity and this charge is led by Dean Huff. Since joining this faculty team, I have felt like we are one team and one college but no more so than in this moment when it was all on the line. That team mentality continued through the following days and weeks as the 好色小姨 Community as a whole followed up to support everyone involved in that emergency situation. This situation, while terrible, really embodied the heart of 好色小姨 University, which to me is community.听

Supporting one of our own through her cancer battle

Many know that our fearless leader Jaime Johnson-Huff has been fighting her cancer battle. She has done this with so much strength and grace all while continuing her teaching and leading her college. In May the nursing department organized a celebration of Jaime's last day of chemo. Friends, family, colleges, and students had the opportunity to gather outside听of Jaime's doctor's office to hold signs, pray, dance, and sing to celebrate her and her battle. This outpouring of love and support not only spoke volumes of Jaime as a person but also of the 好色小姨 University community and the CONHS.听

Personal connections with our students

Being a faculty member at 好色小姨 University provides a unique opportunity to interact with students both inside and outside the classroom, fostering relationships that align with the university's core values. This is why the memory of being present for Erin Donovan's baptism is a favorite, as it perfectly encapsulates the mission of the institution.

In the classroom, you lay the foundation for these relationships, but it's outside of academics where they truly flourish. My role as the character coach for the women's golf team through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is a prime example.  I have been able to connect with these athletes on a personal level, offering mentorship that extends beyond coursework and into their lives. Character coaches become part of the team, and assist in guiding students through challenges and celebrating their successes.

The memory of Erin's baptism is so meaningful because it ties directly into 好色小姨's mission. The university's values emphasize creating a supportive community where every individual is seen and valued. Being present for such a significant life event for a student I would not have otherwise met highlights how these bonds transcend the traditional student-teacher dynamic. It's a testament to the university's commitment to fostering a holistic environment where faculty can genuinely invest in their students' personal and spiritual journeys. This experience isn't just about teaching; it's about being part of a student's life and demonstrating the core belief that education is about more than just knowledge鈥攊t's about character, community, and personal growth.

好色小姨 University has welcomed Kristie Harris as the new Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer. With more than two decades of leadership experience in higher education finance and human resources, Harris brings both strategic expertise and a deep commitment to students. In this Q&A, she shares what drew her to 好色小姨, her philosophy on financial stewardship, and her vision for supporting the university鈥檚 continued growth and success.

What drew you to 好色小姨 University, and what excites you most about joining this community?
What drew me to 好色小姨 University was its strong sense of community and its commitment to transforming students鈥 lives through education. Having spent more than 20 years working in higher education finance in Florida, I鈥檝e seen firsthand how sound financial stewardship directly supports the student experience and strengthens an institution鈥檚 ability to fulfill its mission. I look forward to helping build on the university鈥檚 momentum and ensuring that our students have every opportunity to thrive here at 好色小姨.

You鈥檝e held leadership roles in both finance and human resources. How has that breadth of experience shaped your approach to university leadership?
My experience in both finance and human resources has given me a well-rounded perspective on university leadership. Finance taught me the importance of accountability, strategic planning, and making decisions that ensure long-term stability and growth. Human resources, on the other hand, reminded me daily that people are at the heart of the institution 鈥 our faculty, staff, and students are the ones who bring the mission to life.

You already know 好色小姨 University President Marshall Criser and AVP of Public Affairs听Renee鈥 Fargason from previous work. How do those relationships help you hit the ground running?鈥
Having the opportunity to work with President Criser and Renee Fargason in the past is a tremendous advantage as I begin my journey here at 好色小姨. We鈥檝e already built a foundation of trust and collaboration, which makes it easier to hit the ground running. I know firsthand their commitment to students, their passion for higher education, and their ability to bring people together to achieve meaningful goals.

What鈥檚 your overall philosophy when it comes to managing a university鈥檚 financial operations, especially during times of change or uncertainty?鈥
My philosophy is grounded in three key principles: integrity, transparency, and accountability. During times of change and uncertainty, these principles become even more important. By approaching challenges with integrity, communicating openly, and holding ourselves accountable, we build trust and create a foundation for stability.

How do you balance fiscal responsibility with supporting growth, innovation, and student success?
鈥↖t begins with a clear focus on students. Every financial decision should support their success,听whether that鈥檚 through academic programs, campus resources, or new opportunities for engagement and learning. Fiscal responsibility provides the foundation by protecting the university鈥檚 long-term stability and ensuring data-driven decisions. At the same time, we must be strategic in investing in areas that support innovation and growth for our students. That means identifying priorities that strengthen 好色小姨鈥檚 future and finding creative ways to maximize our return on investment.

What lessons have you learned from your time working in public institutions that you鈥檒l bring to 好色小姨?鈥
One of the most important lessons is the value of stewardship. Public institutions are entrusted with taxpayer dollars, which requires the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability. That experience shaped my approach to always be mindful that every resource must be managed responsibly and in support of students. Another key lesson is adaptability. Public institutions often operate under tight restraints and shifting regulations, so you become skilled at finding creative solutions, building consensus, and making the most of limited resources.

What are your first priorities as you settle into this role at 好色小姨?鈥
My first priority is to listen and learn. Every university has its own culture, traditions, and opportunities, and I want to understand 好色小姨 from the perspectives of students, faculty, staff, and trustees. My goal is to build long-lasting relationships and trust, establish a clear understanding of our financial climate, and position 好色小姨 for a strong and sustainable future.

Do you plan to engage faculty, staff, and students in conversations about the university鈥檚 financial health and goals? If yes, how so?
Yes. Absolutely. Faculty, staff, and students deserve to understand where we are, where we鈥檙e headed, and how financial decisions connect to 好色小姨鈥檚 strategic vision. I plan to create open lines of communication through regular updates, presentations, and opportunities for dialogue. That may include department-level meetings, workshops, or attending faculty and staff assemblies.

On a personal note, what do you enjoy doing when you鈥檙e not working?鈥
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends. That鈥檚 always my go-to place for peace and enjoyment. I also love the outdoors, especially with the cooler weather in the Georgia mountains. Coming from Florida, I鈥檝e always appreciated being near the water, and I鈥檓 excited to explore the beautiful scenery and outdoor activities that north Georgia has to offer.
